Although we have experienced the longest summer on
record, for one group of Buntingford lads and their team mates of the
Buntingford Cougars under-14 squad, next summer cannot come soon enough. The reason behind their excitement is that
they have registered to take part in the youth football world cup, the Gothia
Cup, held in
The Gothia Cup has been held annually since the middle
70’s and has attracted young men and women from over 124 different nations,
730,000 to date. 1500 teams from all age
groups will take part next year.
Football, as a common denominator, brings young people together, and the
lads from the Cougars are very proud to be part of such an event, representing
not only their club but also their town and country.
Spurred on by the success earlier this year of the
Buntingford Town youth football team, who won the Dana Cup in Denmark, Cougars
manager, Mr. Steve Harler says it is his dream to take his team to the Gothia
Cup and play football against youngsters, not only from Europe, but South
America as well. It will be an experience
the lads will never forget.
Preparations are well underway for the trip with the lads
and their parents actively fund raising to bring the cost down and fund a new
team shirt. So far trivia quizzes with a
Swedish theme have kept their neurones ticking on match days to bring in vital
funds. The lads are also looking for a
sponsor for their new shirt, so should
any local retailer or tradesman like to have their name or company logo viewed
by thousands in Gothenburg next summer then they should contact the author.
