From Frank to you, how a Cat appears on your PC

Two webcams sit at either side of Franks cage, these are connected to a PC running Kabcam webcam software. The software takes a static picture with each camera every 5 seconds, adds the header and footer info and sends the pictures to the Image server (this PC also allows Frank to listen to his favourite radio station as suggested by you).

The site itself is built and presented using 'Igentics BuildingSite', a software application designed to implement and manage websites. BuildingSite allows the Cathospital team to quickly make site updates without the need for complex web programming.

Cathospital’s content (the pictures and graphics) is stored on a number of servers and in a database, this is all hosted on high availability hardware at the Igentics hosting facility in Cambridge. When you view the pages, BuildingSite pulls together the requested information and displays it in your browser. The camera pictures are refreshed using a small piece of JavaScript, this means that only the pictures and not the entire page are refreshed, ensuring the site refreshes as fast as possible.

The feedback form, 'tell a friend' and all incoming email go to the Cathospital mail server. All email is vetted (we don’t edit spelling etc) then published via BuildingSite. All user images are resized prior to posting.
The mail server also handles the newsletters.

BuildingSite allows comprehensive analysis of traffic, telling us which sites link to us and telling us the number of users viewing the site at any one time. There are typically between 100 and 500 people watching Frank at any given moment!

All site content and modifications are done using the BuildingSite system, this means the site can be updated from any pc connected to the Internet, ensuring the site is kept as ‘live’ as possible encouraging your interaction. BuildingSite's simple template driven content management system also ensures that the site can be managed by non technical staff.
